There is a piercing glow through what could be a gray and cold October… Spanish Food and Wine Week.
The event, canceled last year due to the pandemic, returns on October 4 and takes place for seven days in restaurants, bars and shops across the country.
It comes at a most opportune time for Spanish winegrowers. Their share of the Irish market reached an impressive 15.4 percent last year.
This is a spectacular increase since the year 2000 when we consumed 257,000 cases of their wine. Last year the figure was phenomenal 1,553,222 cases, making Spain the second largest exporter to Ireland after Chile.
The Spanish Food and Wine Week (this is the sixth edition) has played a major role in introducing and educating in the delights of a wonderful food and wine culture, which many of us have enjoyed. maybe met during summer vacation.
Specially-designed food and wine dinners might be a highlight of the week, but there are also great promotions at many local and independent licenses during the week.

GASTRONOMIC AND WINE WEEK
MONDAY: Six-course Spanish wine dinner at the Circa restaurant (restaurantcirca.com, 01-5342644) hosted by food and wine writer Corinna Hardgrave.
At Carton House, Leixlip, Co Kildare, wine writer John Wilson will guide guests through an exclusive tasting in Duke’s Rest wine cellar (cartonhouse.com, 01-50520000)
TUESDAY: Dublin’s institution La Cave, on South Anne Street, welcomes Jean Smullen for a fun evening of Spanish food and wine (lacavinebar.com, 01-679 4409)
WEDNESDAY: Sherry lovers aren’t forgotten with John Wilson and Blanca Valencia leading a sherry tasting at Port House on South William Street in Dublin (porthouse.fr, 01-6770928).
North of the capital, that same evening, your wine columnist will be at the Tolka House Gastro Pub, hosting a three-course Spanish meal and wines that will be fun and informative. (tolkahouse.fr 01-8371082)
